Top 10 Largest Football Stadiums in the World
I find it very interesting to research about stadiums from all around the world. I gathered a list of the biggest stadiums from around the globe. This list is only for stadiums used for football(soccer). This stadiums are primarily used for football and are used by National teams and the local football clubs.The list is made up according to seating capacity.
#10 Borg al Arab Stadium
The
list starts in North Africa. Our first stop is in Cairo Egypt. In
number 10 we have the Egyptian Army National Team or also known as the
Borg al Arab Stadium. The capacity of the stadium is 86,000. The stadium
was open in 2007. The main reason the stadium was build because Egypt
was in the running for a bit of the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
#9 Bukit Jalil Stadium
We are going to Malaysia in our next stop and the prime destination is Kuala Lumpur. In number nine sit the National Stadium Bukit Jalil. A very beautiful 100,000 spectators venue. Its main purpose is to host football matches for the Malaysia's National teams. The stadium was first open in 1998.
#8 Gelora Karno Stadium
Next stop in number 8 is Gelora Karno Stadium in Indonesia. The stadium seats 88,500 spectators. It was build in 1962 and it was named after the first president of the country.
#7 Wembley Stadium
Here
we come London, and the beautiful Wembley Stadium sitting in number 7
in the list of the largest football stadiums. Wembley stadium is a host
to all England National Team games, as well as other European football
competitions. The capacity of the stadium is 90,000. and it has already
been a host of two Champions League Final matches. The newly renovated
stadium broke ground in 2002 and its first match was in 2007.
#6 Rose Bowl
California here we come! In number six it is the famous Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The capacity of the stadium is 94,000 spectators. The largest ever attendance was recorded to be 106,869 during the 1973 Rose Bowl. The stadium was opened in 1922 and it was one of the venues in the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. Currently however its been used mostly for American Football games, and international football friendlies. Without a doubt the Rose Bowl is one of the most legendary stadiums in the United States.#5 Soccer City Stadium (FNB Stadium)
In
number five we are going down South to Johannesburg, South Africa. The
home of the FIFA World Cup 2010 Final Soccer City Stadium(FNB Stadium).
The stadium was first open in 1989 and renovated for the 2010 World Cup
in 2009. The capacity of the stadium is 94,736. The stadium has been
home of the 2010 World Cup as well as the African Nations Cup. Also it
is the home of the local football team Kaizer Chiefs Football Club in
South Africa.
#4 Camp Nou
Barcelona
here we are. In number four we are coming to only the second stadium
from our list that is based in Europe, and this stadium is the Camp Nou,
the home of Barcelona Football Club. The beautiful venue is also the
home of some of the Spanish National football team matches. The stadium
was build in 1957, but it was expanded in 1982. The capacity of the
stadium is 99,786. the highest attendance recorded was in 1986 during
the match between Juventus and Barcelona and the attendance was 120,000 spectators.
#3 Azadi Stadium
Here
we come in the top three largest venues in the world. A surprising stop
in the Middle East, we are stopping in Tehran, Iran. The Azadi Stadium
is the number three venue. This stadium doesn't have the largest
capacity, but it does have a very large ground. The stadium is
considered a potential home for an Olympic event. The capacity of the
stadium is 100,000 spectators. It was build in 1971, and it was recently
renovated in 2003. The stadium is a home of the Iranian National
football team as well as a home of two local football teams, Persepolis,
and Esteghlal.
#2 Estadio Azteca
In
the number two spot we are going to Mexico, and we are stopping at the
capital of Mexico City. Estadio Azteca has a capacity of 105,000 people.
The largest attendance recorded was 120,000 in 1968 when Mexico faced
Brazil. The stadium was build in 1966 and it was renovated in 1985. It
is a home of the Mexican national football team as well as the local
football club America.
#1 Salt Lake Stadium
In
first place we are going to South Asia, and most precisely India.
Kolkata India is the home of Salt Lake Stadium. The stadium has a
capacity of 120,000 people. The Stadium was build in 1984. It is the
home of four local football teams: Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Pailan
Arrows, and Prayag United.
